Description

Bulgaria annually consumes about 50 Terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity. Production varies within the same limits. These are the values over the past 5 years. 30-40 years ago, production and consumption were significantly higher, for which there is a historical explanation. In the last century, production and export of electricity were significantly higher, with production significantly exceeding consumption. Bulgaria supplied European Turkey, including Istanbul and Northern Greece. The balance was entirely positive. In the 21st century, electricity production has decreased significantly and since last year a trend for a negative balance of electricity has been observed, i.e. imports exceed exports. By disrupting the balance between production and consumption, Bulgaria becomes dependent on external suppliers and this threatens the country's national security.
